CERTIFICATION SCHEME · WHEEL SPECIALISATION

Wheel specialisation

This scheme assesses the ability to measure components, calculate and prepare spokes, select a lacing pattern and build wheels with a verifiable functional result.

SCHEME PROFILE

Technical competence in wheel building

Scheme: Wheel specialisation.

Scope: wheel presentation and analysis; spoke measurement, calculation and cutting; lacing patterns; measurement of J-Bend and Straight Pull hub parameters; wheel building and functional-performance checks.

Intended for: bicycle mechanics who need to demonstrate their ability to build and verify wheels using sound technical judgement.

Reference format: a 10:00–17:00 training day, with a final session for questions and discussion.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Evidence required with the application

Candidates must provide evidence of their technical bicycle-mechanics background and relevant wheel-related training or experience.

  • A valid identity document issued by the relevant country.
  • Training records, certifications or professional experience in bicycle mechanics.
  • Evidence of training or experience in wheel measurement, building or maintenance.
  • Successful completion of the competence-verification assessment defined by the scheme.

COMPETENCY AREAS

Verifiable wheel building

The assessment examines component selection, measurement accuracy, build quality and verification of the functional outcome.

Measurement and preparation

Identifies wheel components, measures spokes and J-Bend or Straight Pull hub parameters, and prepares spoke cutting for the intended build.

Calculation and lacing

Calculates spoke length and selects a suitable lacing pattern according to the intended use and component configuration.

Building and performance

Builds the wheel and explains its behaviour, verifying a functional outcome through an orderly and reproducible method.
