CERTIFICATION SCHEME · PROFESSIONAL BICYCLE MECHANIC LEVEL B
A level for diagnosing and working independently on advanced systems, optimising rider performance, and operating to professional workshop standards.
SCHEME SPECIFICATION
Scheme: Professional Bicycle Mechanic Level B.
Scope: advanced diagnostics; electronic, hydraulic and suspension systems; wheelbuilding; e-bikes; bike fitting; and workshop management.
Intended candidates: professionals with a Level A technical foundation who wish to work independently on advanced systems and understand the commercial and quality implications of their work.
Level within the framework: Level B. It follows Level A, which focuses on standard procedures, safe practice, method and verifiable outcomes, and precedes Level C, which addresses more complex cases, technical leadership and the development of other professionals.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
To apply for Level B, candidates must have a technical foundation equivalent to Level A and provide evidence of training or experience in general bicycle mechanics.
AREAS OF COMPETENCE
The assessment considers knowledge, execution, technical decision-making, and the management of each intervention under conditions representative of a professional workshop.
Understands the interdependencies of bearings, lubrication, electronics, hydraulics, suspensions, and e-bikes; substantiates technical decisions through testing and workshop cases.
Installs and adjusts electronic drivetrains; services suspensions and rear shocks; repairs hydraulic brakes and dropper posts; and builds balanced, correctly tensioned wheels.
Applies bike-fitting and cleat-positioning principles based on biomechanics; structures services, costs, processes, CRM, and basic KPIs to improve workshop performance.
CERTIFICATION CRITERION
Knowledge: explains the operation, compatibility, and limitations of each system.
Practical skill: performs the intervention and objectively verifies the result.
Technical judgement: selects the procedure, replacement part, lubricant, or adjustment on sound technical grounds.
Management capability: understands the effect of time, cost, process, and quality in the workshop.
